We talked with Lucía Iglesias, a 23-year-old volunteer from Spain
Lucía is a 23-year-old from Seville, Spain. After graduating with an degree in political science and a masters in international security, Lucía is taking a gap year to gain new skills and experiences. Lucía is passionate about traveling, getting to know new cultures and new people.
The first time she arrived Cagliari, Sardinia, was for a team volunteering with the organization TDM2000. The aim of the project was to host international participants around Europe to foster international relations and promote democracy. During the month, Lucía fell in love with the island, the people and lifestyle and decided to extend her volunteering to seven months.
Volunteering is an experience that everyone should have in their life
Currently, Lucía’s volunteer work consists of promoting volunteering and human rights on social media in the LIVE project. Part of her work is also educating local youth about the various opportunities abroad that European Solidarity Corps offers. Lucía mentions, that the one of the aspects of her work that she enjoys, is the creative aspect of the social media content.
Because of starting university right after her high school studies, Lucía felt like she needed to take a year to herself. During the year her goals were to travel, improve her English and Italian, but also to contribute to a good cause. Through her university, she found out about the European Solidarity Corps and volunteering opportunities.
During the three months which she has already spent volunteering in Cagliari, she has noticed a change in herself. Lucía mentions that volunteering changes a person, for example she herself has become more confident, tolerant and open for new experiences. She also feels like she has gotten to know herself in more depth through the meaningful encounters and the transformative events.
Looking back, Lucía recommends volunteering as a great way to get to know yourself and identify your passions. She also mentions the various topics and projects that you can choose from. The huge variety, she says, means that everyone will find projects that interest them.
Now Lucía can’t wait for the summer in Sardinia, and for all of the memories and adventures yet to come!
